An even sadder week; we wanted to let Tech know we were there for them, at least in spirit.

I heard about the Virginia Tech shootings on the radio, and tried to think of how to send a cartoon message of comfort. I thought of putting our mascots together, to represent the two campus communities. At the newspaper office, a staffer suggested having them sit on a simple park bench.
This was the fastest work I ever did on a cartoon, only three hours. I know I usually write way too many words. At least this time I knew it would be better to say nothing.
Years later, I learned that this cartoon was part of the reason the Commonwealth Times was awarded the national first prize for breaking news coverage, from the Society of Professional Journalists, among their awards for college news organizations. It's still sad.
