"The Ransom of Red Chief" is a short story by O. Henry. In it, two kidnappers regret taking a boy who insists his name is Red Chief. The kid makes them miserable, and they end up paying the family to take him back.
"The Jules Verne 'gun'" is from the novel *From the Earth to the Moon* in which a giant masonry silo was built in the ground of Florida (in the US, nearest the equator), in which was cast a giant gun tube. A space capsule, shaped like a boat-tailed bullet, was fired from it, into space.
In the 4th panel, toward the top right of the group of objects, is a "Monongahela steel ingot," which was a running joke on the old "Bob [Elliott] & Ray [Goulding] Show." There would occasionally be a skit about a quiz show, and one of the prizes would be an unwieldy, industrial-size hunk of bulk steel. Bob Elliott is the father of comedian Chris Elliott, whom you may know from the first Conan O'Brien show. Or was he on David Letterman's show?
The graphic symbol on the tail fin of Iran Air jets really is that gorgeous. Way to go, Iran Air!
